Optimization of self-developed encoders
We’ve recently finished a project for Mango TV, a prominent media service platform in China. Mango TV, with 280 million unique users and a reputation as a top internet enterprise in China, sought to evaluate self-developed encoders to enhance video transcoding quality and analyze videos from problematic sources.
The requirements included supporting the latest video standards, ensuring ease of use, and optimizing CPU resource consumption. To meet these needs, we installed Elecard StreamEye and Elecard Stream Analyzer for in-depth stream analysis and detection of stream violations.
The results of the implementation were impressive:
- Significant improvement of engineers’ efficiency — the project was completed 1.5 months ahead of schedule
- Decrease of bitrate by 3.8% while maintaining high video quality
- Enhanced video loading performance and cost savings
- Improved troubleshooting of defective video sources
- Increased profit for Mango TV
The implementation involved utilizing StreamEye and Stream Analyzer to analyze full bitrate distribution, macroblock characteristics, prediction types, and calculate objective metrics like PSNR, SSIM, NQI, and VMAF. These tools optimized the existing AVC/H264 and HEVC/H265 encoders, facilitated familiarity with new video compression standards, and will aid in further optimizing AV1 and VVC/H266 encoders. Six engineers now regularly use Elecard solutions at Mango TV.
