Integration of local content in OTT and IPTV
OTT broadcasting is gaining traction. The technology allows delivering media directly to viewers over the Internet, bypassing cable, broadcast, and satellite television platforms. Users can watch videos anywhere using their TV sets, phones, tablets and computers as OTT supports many screen formats. People choose viewing OTT channels for such benefits of the service as personal content selection, interactivity and instant start of playback.
The Wifire company, which offers such type of broadcasting to its customers, turned to Elecard to provide users in different parts of the big country with local channels. Wifire is a federal high-speed communication operator, a subsidiary of MegaFon. It offers its clients such services as residential Internet and digital television in the seven federal districts of Russia.
Elecard developed and implemented a turn-key system for receiving local TV channels and preparation of content for IPTV and OTT broadcasting. This solution is based on the transcoder Elecard CodecWorks supporting Quick Sync technology. The system receives two federal multiplexes, CodecWorks transcodes AVC/MPEG-2 stream into AVC format at three bit rates and packetizes it in HLS.
The solution guarantees stable broadcasting, as it includes redundancy of all system components. If an error occurs, the schema automatically switches to the reserve source, and viewers will not notice any issue.
There is no need to manage encoding servers in each city individually as it provides centralized control via GUI and web-interface.
“We were set a task of providing our subscribers with multiplex with local channels. Elecard engineers have implemented a ready-made solution that guarantees uninterrupted broadcasting as well as support of subtitles in OTT. CodecWorks is easy to manage for novices, and for advanced users, it opens up many additional possibilities,” noted Nikita Semichev, the Head of Wifire TV platform operation department.
“In this project, we combined the output for OTT, DVB, and IPTV in one hybrid solution, which allowed the customer saving money on the purchase of equipment. Our engineers provided exclusive technical support at every stage of testing and implementation of the project. We sincerely hope that success of this project will inspire other TV operators to switch to OTT broadcasting with no complications and damage to their budget,” said Nikolay Milovanov, Elecard CEO.
Elecard CodecWorks is a professional software solution for real-time decoding, encoding, and transcoding into MPEG-2/AVC/HEVC with up to 16K resolution supporting multiscreen encoding and HLS/MPEG-DASH adaptive streaming technologies.
